Thank you for a fantastic year. After our launch in July 2017, with a screening of Sex World at the Grand Illusion Cinema, we have hosted 13 film screenings and held our very first erotic film festival, SECS Fest. And without so much community support, it couldn’t have happened.
And now, we are back at work putting together film programs for 2018.
So we begin 2018 with a sexual voyage into the NYC underground art salons in Shortbus (2006), John Cameron Mitchell’s follow up to Hedwig and the Angry Inch. Sex-therapist Sophia Lin (Sook-Yin Lee) reveals in a session that she has never actually had an orgasm. And so we are brought into the sex lives of some unique characters who are also seeking connection and finally, they converge at an erotic salon hosted by Mx Justin Vivian Bond. Shortbus is, according to Variety, “unquestionably the most sexually graphic American narrative feature ever made outside the porn industry.” And John Cameron Mitchell achieved this by making a comic romance with unsimulated sex, that appreciates the humanity of the act.
So join us on January 18th for Shortbus. Note: the starting time has not yet been posted.
And finally, submissions are open for SECS FEST 2018. So spread the word and finish up those erotic films as we would love to see them at our second festival.
The Seattle Erotic Cinema Society monthly film event is this Thursday. We are so excited to present Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice on 35mm. When Roger Ebert reviewed the film, he correctly points out that “it isn’t really about wife swapping at all, but about the epidemic of moral earnestness that’s sweeping our society right now.” One reason Bob & Carol… remains relevant is that it is a sly comedy of manners about honesty in marriage. So while at times the film feels a bit dated, we still identify with Bob and Carol’s optimistic experimentation with open marriage and Ted and Alice’s discomfort with their friends’ improprieties.
So join us for an exploration of non-monogamy on the silver screen. The Stranger recommends it. And if you are still not convinced, there are all of the groovy 1960s fashions.
And for once, we are showing a completely non-explicit, Rated R, mainstream(ish) movie.
Submissions for the 2018 festival opened on Film Freeway on November 1st. However, we were in the process of transitioning the website to SECSFEST.org, so the announcement didn’t go out. Despite this minor complication, filmmakers are already finding the festival through filmfreeway.org.
So polish up that erotic film that you’ve had in the works and submit it before the end of the early bird deadline on December 1st.
We are also had at work selecting films for our monthly screenings at the Grand Illusion Cinema. While the next films have not yet been confirmed, I can say to expect the films to be a bit more mainstream and less explicit, but the film we’ve selected for November is super sexy. Hopefully, we will be able to announce the title any day now.

Now that our staff has fully recovered from our first 3 day erotic film festival, we are back at work finding erotic films to show to unsuspecting Seattle audiences. For October, we are showing Bruce LaBruce’s first foray into the under appreciated genre of gay zombie porn, Otto; Or, Up with Dead People.

Otto is a handsome, sensitive, neo-Goth zombie with an identity crisis. He wanders the streets of the city, never sleeping, until one day he auditions for a zombie film. The director, an eccentric bohemian, begins making a film about Otto, while simultaneously shooting a film about a gay zombie revolt against consumerist society. As the final, orgiastic scene of the film is being shot, Otto struggles to access the human emotions buried beneath his zombie exterior, including memories of his ex-boyfriend, Rudolf.
Toying with genre conventions, Bruce LaBruce combines different media, including a humorous film-within-the-film, while creating a new, sexy, hyper-politicized zombie mythology in OTTO; OR; UP WITH DEAD PEOPLE. Bruce LaBruce is a writer, filmmaker, and photographer hailing from Toronto, Canada. He helped launch the so-called Homocore or Queercore movement with the production of homo punk fanzines and Super 8 movies. Many of LaBruce’s films have become cult favs including HUSTLER WHITE and THE RASPBERRY REICH. Often using pornography as a starting point to examine sexual politics and homosexual radicalism, LaBruce’s films push boundaries and genres. His most recent films include REFUGEE’S WELCOME and THE MISANDRISTS.

SECS Fest 2017 was a huge success. Thank you to all of the organizers who spent the last year planning the event, the volunteers who helped throughout the weekend, the filmmakers who submitted their work and finally, to all those who attended. I don’t think it would be possible for a very first film festival to have mostly full screenings, especially with so little time to get the word out. But you came and made it an exciting weekend.
On Sunday night, at the closing party, the winners of the SECS Fest 2017 Golden Raincoat awards were announced. There were four awards, Best Feature, Best Short Film, Best Sex-Positive Film, and Best Humor.
And the first ever Golden Raincoat winners are…
Best Feature: Exotic, the very smart documentary on sex-work in Guam from director Amy Oden.
Best Short Film: Sonata by David Bloom.
Our selection for a film that communicates progressive sex-positive values goes to See Me by Ms. Naughty.
And finally Best Humor goes to the film that kept the SECS Fest jury rolling is the aisles with laughter, House of Air from filmmaking duo Brian and Karl.
Congratulations to our winners. Our Jury deliberated long and hard trying to choose favorites as there were so many favorites. So I’m going to list some of the honorable mentions that really could be right there with the winners. Feminist and Submissive from Erika Lust, Cake by Anne Hu, The Training of Poe, the French dramatic short, Jules and finally the experimental short Cellular Activity: Bedtime Story.
So again, thank you to all that made the weekend momentous. The organizers are in need of a few days of rest and then, we will be putting out the call for submissions for 2018 and sending out physical awards to the 2017 winners.
